While overt racism does still exist in the UK, according to the government’s report that was published this yesterday, the country should be seen as “a model for other white-majority countries”. The race report finds the UK to be a “model to the world”.

Meanwhile, in real life, we have clear evidence of institutional racism:

– in the Windrush scandal; in the way Grenfell residents have been treated

– in asylum seekers, who are paid 40% less than the standard rate for Universal Credit

– in education – higher exclusions rates, censorship in the curriculum and ongoing attainment gaps in higher education; – in the Criminal Justice System – black people in England and Wales are nine times more likely to be imprisoned than white people

– and in health – black mothers are four times more likely to die in childbirth

Just over half of the 13-25 year olds who engage with Youth Concern are not white. We are proud to be a multi-ethnic community but we all have to recognise there is so much more work to be done before the UK could consider itself a model for other countries. Read the report for yourself here
