| On 1st May, the Government is bringing in the new Renters’ Rights Act, the aim of which is to make sure that tenants, in particular those renting from private landlords have “greater security and stability so they can stay in their homes for longer, build lives in their communities and avoid the risk of homelessness”. The Act will abolish no-fault evictions, introduce Assured Periodic Tenancies, and reform possession grounds. It will also limit rent increases, ban rental bidding and strengthen enforcement against discrimination and illegal practices. The changes primarily affect the private rented sector but also apply to supported housing. The Act includes a new category for “Stepping Stone” accommodation, which is specifically for a transitional period helping people to move to independence, such as Youth Concern’s The Next Step housing project. At Youth Concern we welcome the act as it gives renters more security. Our role as stepping stone accommodation provider at The Next Step is to support and prepare young people for independent living and this act reassures us that our young people will be safe and secure. As responsible support providers we have updated our policies and practices to ensure that we are meeting the requirements of the act. |
